Can a Win 7 Home Pre. serial work on a Win 7 Ultimate?

I just purchased a copy of Win 7 Home Pre. Upgrade (Student Deal) and now a buddy of mines is going to lend me his copy of Win 7 Ultimate. Will my Win 7 Home Pre. serial work on a Win 7 Ultimate? or do I need to purchase me a serial for Ultimate?

Absolutely not and what you and your friend are contmplating is Piracy. If you wish to run Windows 7 Ultimate, you should be able to purchase it from your school.

Win7 Enterprise, Win7 x86 (Ult 7600), Win7 x64 Ult 7600, TechNet RTM on AMD x64 (2.8Ghz)

Serial # (Key Codes) tied to particular versions of Windows 7 (but same for 32 bit & 64 bit of same version) but only 1 key valid with 1 computer at a time

your home serial will not work on ultimate, you need a key for the ultimate edition to get ultimate. to be honest, i wouldnt waste my money on ultimate and get the pro if you need windows xp mode, unless you need muti language and boot to vhd image support. other than those 2 things they are the same

I'm sorry, questions like this make me laugh.

If it worked like that people would buy Home Premium and just download a Ultimate DVD on the internet, and use it that way. MS would not ever allow something like this.

I haven't installed Home Pre. yet and tried to use the code yet on another version, so I haven't done nothing as you have suggested.

Actually there is a few more, like backing up to a network and bit-locker.

But perhaps the poster is only interested in using the Ultimate disk to install Home Premium. . . That is possible. You have to edit the install disk to delete the sources/ei.cfg file. There are a few steps involved in doing that but once you have removed this file, you can select to install Home Premium and use your H.P key to activate it. And there is nothing illegal about doing that.

Actually not...remember that the Ultimate Edition Disc will go straight to Ultimate Installation...

I believe ei.cfg would need to be modified/removed
