Check all your drivers, because they may be outdated, or somehow prevent the proper results of the index service.
May be your displaydriver or video card.
Remove unnecessary hardware just in case.

The index-service is a real pain in you know where.

Hi guys, because I was running it in a VM I didn't know I had to install guest additions and Enable Direct3D support for Aero to work. I got access to that Window Colors panel now but as I feared it offers nothing new in terms of proper customization except letting me change the color of the Aero dialog boxes which I don't plan on using anyway.

EDIT: WEI still fails but I guess it's not important at this point.

Does anyone know how to change that white color to something else? What do those people who create those custom themes modify? Is there some file I can hex edit 255 255 255 to 0 0 0?

Well you could try with regedit: HKey current user/ control panel/ colors.
Backup your system before you change something in the register.
Guess it's the info window?

If you change the colour it will probably become visible after restarting.

Be carefull because you need a contrast.
Black fonts on a black background wouldn't be visible.

In windows 7 the colors are located in a rather obscure registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance\New Schemes\Current Settings SaveAll\Sizes\0
from there the values are not named with user friendly names. It takes some experimenting to determine that Color #5 is the window background color.
Fortunately, in Win 8 it is much simpler. The colors are stored in this key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors
and the values have nice user friendly names, so Window is the window background color and Window Text is the window text, etc.
These are string values and the color format is decimal RGB values for the color you want in RRR GGG BBB.
black = 0 0 0, white is 255 255 255, silver is 192 192 192 and what I use personally is 206 197 151.
The change does not take effect immediately. You need to restart windows first.

I can change that for you, using Windows Style Builder and post it here in a zip folder.

This will be a custom theme and you will need to do 1 of these 2 ways of Enabling custom themes for it to work.
Enabling Custom Themes - Windows 7
Or

Let me know.

Bernardus, I changed all of the FFFFFF keys to 606060 but nothing changed upon restarting. I guess those registry keys aren't it.

Bongo, I'm really picky and there are many backgrounds I'd wanna change. I like green text on dark blue (decimal 96) background and have all those normally silver windows and buttons 0 85 170. I'd prefer if I just knew where to customize all this so I could customize on my own.

I have universal theme patcher installed so do I still need UxStyle?

There is a key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors

http://www.askvg.com/how-to-access-a...-in-windows-8/

What I tried was advanced settings in the windows personalisation.
Changed the background to grey.
Immediate the background of Exel, Word or Wordpad changed to that grey color.
But not in explorer?

You need to edit the .msstyles in the theme folder, I use Ave's Windows7 Style Builder for that.
