need help badly

I am pulling my hair out. It started out cause My system HP Compaq 2010 win 7 64 bit, Stopped seeing or recognizing my
Fuji Camera. Somebody said get a card reader, so I got this $6.00 one from big lots. Should be OK I thought.
Still would not recognize card reader. So I don't know, maybe the card is no good, Get another card, same problem.
Meanwhile thumb drive is read right away. So I was reading about deleting the filters in some string, well I went there, and there is no filter.
So like a jerk I on a Whim or impulse I deleted the filter from another line.
Now I don't have no keyboard on that machine.
Even if I remove the keyboard from device manager and re install it, it says it installed the drivers, and all is well, but it still don't work.
So I did a re install from a ghost copy I have on my external HD, from over 6 months ago, and it took so GD long to install, I had to go to bed for the night.
Well still no keyboard.Of course, No I didn't back up the registry, I wasn't sure how to do it.
I had some back ups in my folder, but when I went back and did the re install off the ghost, now of course the back up is gone.
So to my original problem it showed the camera and the card reader as unknown device in device manager, removing it and replacing did not help.
I am thinking something happened to the camera, and maybe the card reader is no good, as it will not be read on 2 computers. But I really need my keyboard back in the win 7 system.
Is there a way to restore the registry.
Oh Yeah, system restore does not work, it says it failed, no changes were made.
Or am I forced to re install windows. I would have thought the restore from the ghost image would have fixed it.
Thank You

If you have a restore point still on the machine you could try ShadowExplorer. Look for a file C:\users\username\ntuser.dat(inside the restore point. ShadowExplorer looks a lot like an undeleter. Just use the date dropdown. If it finds any restore points the dropdown will have choices.) You could try copying it over the current one. I'm not sure what all the registry filenames are though. It's worth a shot.

Next time back up using something like Macrium Reflect. It automatically stores registry in the backup image. You can also use ERUNT freeware for registry only backup.

The restore point should have registry files. ShadowExplorer can get individual files out of restore points. This explains how it works:
Recover Files with Shadow Copies on Any Version of Windows Vista

Even though you may not be able to run the restore point, it may have the settings file with the string you changed to fix it.

You're not very specific about the filter string. You may have to search to find which reg file it is in, if it's in one. But it might be better than a wipe and install. It may not be possible. It's up to you how much time you want to spend on trying it. I haven't done it myself so I can't gauge the effort needed.

Thanks for trying to work with me.
I am not really a dummy, I just play one at home sometimes.
I guess I am Decent with computers, I was good with 98, had to be........................LOL
Remember how unstable 98 was. Always had to fool with it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

WAS THE STRING
small miracle, But from a cmd window, I ran ( I read this from a searxch, I didn't think it was going to work)
At the command prompt , type.
chkdsk /r [note space after chkdsk]
It took over an hour to run, but I have my keyboard back..
Now, on to the card reader, If you understood my post, do you think The card reader might be bad,, and the camera too.
I think the batteries in the camera died when I was trying to up load off the camera.
I think I read that is not a good thing.
Thanks, Tony

That's not it. We all have areas of experience or study. Some problems I have no clue to solve other posters pick right off etc.. I was just trying to point out sometimes the "shortcut" may take longer than a complete install. But since I never ran into this issue before I didn't have an idea which method would take longer. Turns out your "shortcut" worked fine.

Do you have access to another machine to try the card reader? Unless I have an idea the direction to search for the fix I resort to "divide and conquer" technique. In this case first division would be hardware or software. If the device worked on another PC then you could assume it's not the device etc.. Often people waste time adjusting software settings when the hw is dead doornail.

Yeah, I have a 2nd computer, Forgot to mention. Thats what I was using to write here when the keyboard wasn't working. Yeah, I got lucky with that At the command prompt , type chkdsk /r [note space after chkdsk]

Would not read on either computer, yet both computers picked up my wireless mouse and My thumb drive Right away.
Told Big Lots, I was "Pretty sure" the reader was bad, they gave me another one, and My computer picked it up right away. So it was bad.
Lot of aggravation saturday and yesterday.
All (So far..............LOL) in good now.
Thanks for you help.
