Folder copying icon stuck on cursor

Hi all,

While dragging a folder from one external hard drive to the other, the entire process froze. (The copy didn't initiate) I opened the task manager and used End Task on the two frozen windows. A few moments later, the folder copying icon appeared on my cursor... and now it's stuck there, in spite of the fact that nothing is copying.

I can click inside a folder and no copy initiates. I can't find a way to get this icon off of my cursor without restarting. (It does vanish temporarily in certain programs, like Photoshop) I can restart if necessary but a set of very large files are mid-copy and I'd like to find another way to shake this phantom icon if it's possible.

Here's a screencap of the logo I'm stuck with:

Thanks!

Welcome to our forum.
Could you please use this method to post screen shot. It's better for the members.

To answer your question: Sometimes a simple reboot can solve problems like you are having.

Since you were copying and not cut/pasting, there should be no harm in rebooting... it will also allow you to see if any files were actually copied, and then just copy the remainder. Also, I thought I heard once a long time ago (could be wrong) that Windows chokes on large file transfers (can't believe that would be true anymore!) but I have always used the free tool Teracopy, which integrates seamlessly into W7 and copies large transfers just fine. Something to consider, perhaps.

As both of you suggested, rebooting was all it took to resolve the problem.

Layback Bear, thanks for letting me know about the best way to post screen shots in the forum! I'll make sure and follow that protocol from now on.

remm, I'll definitely consider Teracopy. Copying massive files is a daily occurrence at my workplace and we could use any advantage we can get.

Rebooting never hurts anything but many times will make things work as they should.

I have never used Teracopy so I will be unable to help you with it's use.
Happy computing.

Glad it worked out. As for Teracopy, there is a zero learning curve, happily. Just install it and the next time you go to transfer a file, a little Teracopy progress window pops up and handles the transfer for Windows. If for some reason you want to uninstall it, it uninstalls quickly and cleanly through the Control Panel's normal Programs & Features link where you go to uninstall any program.

One note... I have not had to install it in awhile and can't remember if, like most freeware these days, it is bundled with toolbars or Chrome or some other program... so just be watchful in the install process to UNCHECK any extra's it might be bundled with and JUST install Teracopy alone.

Enjoy.
