Hi Johnnya
No haven't checked, but I did try Win Defender disc again and that booted so I;m reckoning that the "Ultimate" and recovery are not working properly.

I think I'm resigned to replacing the HD and reloadng win 7 now...

Unplug the hard drive, it should boot from the dvd rom now. If it still doesn`t, then your drive is bad or the install media is bad.

If you follow the steps and use the tools and methods provided in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
then you will get and keep a perfect install for as long as you do. But if you are planning to import a bunch of drivers from HP into a driver-complete OS then you are already on the wrong track.

I have a bit of a puzzle, and I don't know whether to blame the motherboard maker, Microsoft, or -- this is a really distant third choice, obviously -- myself. (That being said, UEFIs and GPT drives are new to me, so that distant third choice might not be as distant as I'd hoped.) I recently set...

Choosing which OS to boot by changing BIOS boot order
I am choosing which OS to boot by changing the boot order in my BIOS. To me, this seems clean and simple. I built 32 bit XP on one disk, then removed that disk from my system, installed a different disk, and built 64 bit W7. When both disks are installed, I change the boot order to select the OS...
