My question is if running Windows 7 with MS Office 2003 is a problem. I am getting conflicting opinions on it as referenced above.

It will be a problem in sofar as any security exposure in Office 2003 can be exploited by malware. And those exposures, even when they are known, will no more be patched by MS. There it does not make any difference on which OS you run. Question, of course, is - how big is that exposure.

I just had a call from another client (a small, community water district) worried that their XP machine would crash on the 9th. This must be Microsoft's most effective marketing campaign ever. Fear and paranoia are at large in the XP community.

That is certainly true. The funny thing seems to be that it does not help Windows 8, but Windows 7 at best. And many people look at other alternatives.

Well Ubuntu is one of the most popular. But I didn't mean to leave out the hundreds of other distros.

They used to be the most popular until they started pushing Unity and Gnome3.
