Windows licensing problem

So I got a new computer and gave my old one to my father. I reinstalled Windows 7 on the old one for a fresh start using the CD from my new computer because the old one didn't come with a disc, but I used the activation code from the old computer. Same version of Windows and all, but now my father is getting the but a valid copy of Windows message. So is there a fix, did I do something wrong, or should I just but new copy of Windows and install that on the old computer?

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

From what I can tell, you did nothing wrong. You should be able to use most any Windows 7 installation DVD to install retail or OEM Windows 7. You might be interested in this tutorial:

As far as how to fix the issue with that old computer, I'll have to let others comment on that.

If the computer is in another home, then you might want to install TeamViewer and set it up for unattenuated connections. Then you can set the old computer not to sleep (just while you are working to sort this out). That lets you remote into the computer anytime that you have the time :-)

What you did is OK, but I think the problem may be is that the two computers are different brands, is that correct? You can't use a Dell disk to install Windows to a Asus because the disks are different. If that is the case, you can download here Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River a Windows 7 ISO and burn it to a DVD (You will need to go about half way down the page to find your version). You can install that with no problem. Just be sure and get the same version as was on your old PC (Home Premium, Pro, etc) and also get the correct 32-bit or 64-bit. You can then input the activation code from the sticker and you should be set.

Thanks guys. The new computer is a cyber power and the old one is a Dell. So you think the best thing to do is use that link and do another install on the old computer? Thanks again

Yes, I think that will solve your problem.

Even if you used the Dell Reinstallation DVD (not the Recovery disk set) as long as you inputted the correct Product Key from the COA sticker on machine and used the exact same verison, it should work.

But if you used a copy of Windows 7 downloaded from a torrent, then it might have had a crack or something else added which could have fouled activation.

If you want to start over then follow these steps to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.
