Win7 says icon files contain no icons

I wanted to change the icon displayed on the desktop for my external hard drive. When I select a .ico file that contains more than one icon, Windows 7 says it contains no icons. The files worked fine in WinXP. Also, when I use IrfanView to display the file, it says it can't decode it. The same version of IrfanView on WinXP will open the file, displaying the first icon. I would like to use some of my icon collection, rather than just the ones in SHELL32.dll. Any ideas?

Sure search any *.ico file and .. The shortcut for which you want to use this icon..right click..properties..change icon..browse for this icon (anyname.ico)..that's it.. and if you don't have any icon file.. you can create it using some applications..and if you want using some programs eg. i use xnview
