Open with shows two IE options 1 works 1 does not

Hi i went to open a .xml extention file and as i have always done i chose to open it with ie so i could read the file in its formated version. I am running Win 7 pro 64

I noticed that i had two ie options on that menu as seen below in the image twoieopt.jpg

So i selected the first one and what came up was nothing, just a blank ie page but nothing works, not the about option - nothing happens and if i try to manually put in the local file url it just closes. This is shown below in the image trytoopen1.jpg, it acts like a defunked or broken ie version.

So then i chose the second option and it works fine as seen below in the image numb2works.jpg

I read that win7 comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit, how that all works i have no clue, its confusing. So i thought well maybe 32 bit is not working but there is no way to find out on IE11 which version your running via the about option.

So i went into the control panel and made sure my default setting was set to IE and also that my other default open in set defaults was also ie. (i dont remember what they are called but there are two places to change that and i did them both)

Then i went into the regedit and removed the ie entry for xml extention per these instructions How to Remove Programs from the "Open With" List and that cleared out the option for ie for that file ext.

But when i go to repeat the process and choose ie again to open the file, it always recreates the defunk version again, and we are back to square one. I cant figure out what number 1 ie option is, is it 32 bit or some kind of broken version and how to get rid of it.

    Any ideas, thanks :)

    Hello Durango,

If you like, see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed xml option in the tutorial below to restore it's default associations may be able to help with this as well. :)
