When trying to boot from the Recovery disk, did you change the boot order to tell the system to try to boot from the DVD drive first? You'll need to go into the BIOS and change the boot order there. On many machines, you can press F12 during boot to access the boot order menu.

If you have the boot order correct, you should see a prompt during boot that says "Press any key to boot from CD...".

What were the results of running the Diagnostics from the F12 menu? Did it detect and diagnose the Hard drive and other hardware? THen as I wrote before boot back into F12 to try the fuller suite of diagnostics labeled Utility Partition.

You cannot simply put the Win DVD You burned into the drive and expect it to boot. You must trigger it to boot by tapping the same F12 key. Look for the DVD drive choice. When you select it do you get a prompt to "Press any Key to boot disk?" If not then it is not burned correctly. Did you use the Windows Tool to burn it to a new disk? Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool.

Once it's booted click Next to the second screen and choose Repair My Computer. Does it find an installation to repair? If so highlight it, click through to tools to run Startup Repair.
Report back what it finds.

Is it possible the Active flag was moved from its partition when your husband worked in Disk Management? You can determine which is Partition Marked Active using the Command Line in System Recovery Options from disk, or go ahead and download the Partition Wizard bootable CD, rightclick its file to burn to CD with Windows Image Burner, boot it and take a camera snap of the full drive map and listings, post back using Paper Clip in reply box.

There is no reason to buy a new PC because some minor change was made that has made it unbootable. We deal with this every day here. At worst it will require doing a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is vastly better install than the Dell preinstalled Win7, better than 90% of users have. You already backed up your files so there will be no loss, only gain.

I am SO appreciative that you are spending your time trying to help me. We spent 12 hours on this yesterday and have been at it 6 so far today. I am doing as best I can trying to keep you updated.

"You cannot simply put the Win DVD You burned into the drive and expect it to boot. You must trigger it to boot by tapping the same F12 key. Look for the DVD drive choice. When you select it do you get a prompt to "Press any Key to boot disk?"
NOPE, Just the Boot MGR missing If not then it is not burned correctly. Did you use the Windows Tool to burn it to a new disk? Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool.

Oh Man, I Put the dvd in I downloaded on my desktop. Look what it said:
File "autorun.dll" could not be loaded or is corrupted. Setup cannot continue.
So I have spent all this time for nothing. Should have known when it took 2.5 hours to DL.

Last thing it said before shutting it off was
" No suitable Disk Media is Present. Code can be used by Tech Support to help Diagnose the problrem. " Express Test Service Tag 0FDO.133c MSG Disk

Now we are back to Boot mgr missing......

How long would you guess it would take to fix it if we started over ?????
Could we do a PM ????

We keep help in the thread so others can learn. The error most likely means the hard drive is dead or dying.

What were results of Diagnostics and utility partition run from F12? If they will not run then boot the HD diagnostics CD TEST also linked repeatedly.

It is discouraging that you've spent so much time yet skipped so many steps. This requires not missing a single step. If you are unsure how to perform a step ask back but we are wasting time repeating steps so start at top of steps I've given you and work through every one before we give any more.

As to disk. I've asked you three times if you burned it using tool and if it Will boot in another PC? If not then make sure download completes this time and burn to new DVD with tool, make sure it boots in another PC

Once again, you need to install and use Partition Wizard to add space from D to C.

As you clearly can`t do it with Disk Management.

Partition Wizard is sooo much easier for a novice.
