Won't complete boot- no errors, Repair startup fails

Bear with me... trying to help my niece in another state. Her only computer is the problem, so she can't directly search for fixes.

She has a Windows 7 Home edition workstation. Her daughter (9) was playing on it when she said it suddenly stopped working. It would reboot, but wouldn't complete the boot. Shows the home screen- but then comes up with an explorer window saying "not responding."

The rebooted in safe mode and tried to restore from the oldest date. That showed a progress bar that moved part of the way but wouldn't complete.

Tried again and this time chose to "repair" first and it came back stating it couldn't fix it.

Any ideas of what to do next?

Here is a tutorial on how to troubleshoot starting windows 7, which will require a full read through, but should solve the issue. It's hard troubleshooting miles away though. I suggest again trying to run startup repair, and maybe a restore point a week before the incident. You can also try last known configuration.

You might try booting into System Recovery Options to run the Startup Repair and then if needed System Restore which Andrew suggested.

Let us know what it reports. Then you can work through the steps in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start
