So there are no choices in BIOS setup for SATA controller? If not then skip that step.

What SATA controller driver is in the Device Manager now listed under IDE-ATA? Name, date and version number?

You can try the driver on the mobo's Downloads webpage which pretty old: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- If it won't install, try installing in Vista Compatibility Mode .

What BIOS version does it have now in BIOS setup or System Information? Compare to latest non-Beta on webpage.

What happens when it crashes? Is it generating a crash file we could have analyzed here for you? Look for C:\Windows\Minidump.

since building this machine I haven't updated the Bios as if it goes wrong then I will have no pc,if I download sata driver as you suggest as its a vista board should I refrain from installing updates that come via Driver Detective

Driver Programs are not needed and counterproductive in Win7. You should enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) and then Check for Updates, install all rounds of Important and Optional Updates, with reboots, until no more are offered.

I asked you to look over the steps for what works best for Win7, based on tens of thousands of installs we've helped with here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Install the SATA controller I linked for you, see if that resolves the crash.

Read the changes provided in each BIOS update since your current version to see if its something you need.
