Well, you have to make some compromises based on your hardware and lack of ports.

Backup to an internal is considerably faster than backup to an external.

Copying a CD in two steps rather than one may take a bit more time, but I assume you know how to do it or can learn easily enough.

How often would you be running a backup and be able to take advantage of the internal's backup speed? Daily?

How often do you copy CDs? Daily?

Buying a separate controller card would be the least desirable course if it were my PC. Not necessarily a poor choice, but it's an expense and you have no way of knowing in advance what snares you might run into.

I wouldn't think two external drives for backup is a top choice either since both would be slow and I don't know that you would need the portability aspect for both backups.

You just have to decide which is less desirable over the long haul: living with one optical drive or doing without a fast internal backup.
