    Receiving "choose the program you would like to use to open"


    Hey folks,

    After my Windows 7 machine auto-updated and restarted, all of my desktop icon look like a blank (white space - no lines) notepad icon. When I double click to open these icons, I receive a window that says: choose the program you would like to use to open

    This is also happening when I try to do a System Restore in normal mode.

    I looked online how to run system restore in Safe Mode with command prompt, and successfully restored my machine to two weeks earlier, but after restarting in normal mode, I still see the same blank icons and clicking the icons still shows me "choose the program you would like to use to open".

    Please help!

    The only thing that opens is my pictures, but all other programs give me the choose program message.

    Try this tutorial here:

    Default File Type Associations - Restore

    Download the dll default, exe default, and link defaults. Then restart.

    I also highly suggest scanning your pc with malwarebytes and your antivirus program full scan.
