Windows 7 makes changes on its own

    1. I place the icons on the desktop precisely where I want them and every other day they scramble to new positions.
    2. In Word, whenever I type anything the Home tab changes to the File tab and I lose access to all selections (bold, Italic, type style and size, etc.) until I click on the Home tab again

None of this happens on my Windows 8 notebook or did it happen in XP.

    Is there is a fix?

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

For item 1, try the link to a tutorial mentioned in this post:
Control Panel -> Uninstall or change program -> Columns sorting

The post is about Explorer columns, but Explorer is what presents your desktop to you too. As mentioned in that post, you might want to get the desktop restore tool from the MIDIOX website.

What version of Word do you have? Office 2010? Office 2013?

For icon placement, install a program like DesktopOK. It remembers where icons are placed and puts them back if you tell it to or at boot time.

Edit: Also, clicking on Refresh once icons are where you want them helps Windows to remember the layout.

    Hi and welcome to Sevenforums,
Which security suite/ s do you have installed,
You've only filled in a limited number of system spec's
Use the link above my signature image to fill in your system spec's page,

The issues aren't normal by any means,
Right click your desktop background and point at View and make sure auto arrange is not checked,

The "icons moving around" issue seems to affect quite a few people (a couple of my VMs are affected by this issue).

I've been using computers since before Windows was born and never consulted a forum before. Now in "old age" I found this one is great and I appreciate the responses I got. Thanks to all. Will check them all out and let you know how I made out.
