System sounds are muted: others are not???

My system sounds (exit windows etc.) are muted. They will not play even by pushing the "test" button in Control panel;Sound. Other sounds work normally. How to fix?

System sounds won't stay muted
I like to have my system sounds muted but it likes to unmute itself. The ping of the UAC annoys me especially when I'm watching something that needs the volume turning up quite a bit. I drag the bar down or click mute but next time the UAC pops up it pings again and it's back on full volume. ...

Delayed system sounds
Currently running 7022 (runs fine for me so I'm not upgrading until RC1) and among the annoying little quirks is the fact that all of my system sounds (alerts, etc) appear to be delayed. I hear them a full second or two after the action that triggers them. Anyone else having this problem? Is...
