Permission error on Hard disk media files

    Dear All,

    Greetings!

I am facing an issue with respect to files stored on my external hard drive. I earlier had XP Professional on my machine and got Win 7 x32 Professional installed just yesterday.

Now when I connect my hard disk, I cannot play any media file in one particular folder.

I remember making the file hidden and changing its security settings because I did not want any body to access that folder. This was when I was on xp. Now after getting Win 7, every file I play, I get an error that I do not have sufficient privilege to play the file.

Attaching the screen shot of the error I am getting.

I have a large movie collection about to become obsolete! Kindly help!

    Warm regards,

    NK

Basically it seems I checked "encrypt contents to secure data" option while I was on XP. and when I uncheck it, it says permission error. Also, when I try to add my name onto the list of users allowed to change encryption setting, it says I do not have permission to change it!

    Hope this helps!

Open an Elevated COmmand Prompt, and run the following command on two or three of the files - let's see what that has to say

    ICACLS <fullpathandfilename>
    e.g. ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\slui.exe

    post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
