Turn Laptop On when Lid is opened

I just upgraded (via Customer Install) my Vista laptop to 64-bit Win7 HP.

Under Vista, I was able to set Power Options so that the computer would go to sleep/hibernate when I close the lid. That works in Win7.

However, I was also able to set the Power Options so that the laptop would wake up and restore Windows when I opened the lid. So far, I have been unable to set that behavior in Windows 7.

Do anyone have some advise for me on how to accomplish this?

Hi DougR, ive googled and checked on Microsoft forums and i can't find that function in Windows 7 as well. So unfortunatly we will just have to settle with the other positive sides of Win7

Th option needs to be implemented in the driver and hardware. Some how the hardware has to send a message to the OS when the screen is opened or closed.

Normally if the computer successfully enters sleep when you close the lid it should awaken successfully when you open the lid. So this is a bit odd that yours enters sleep but doesn't return. And Power Options only address "lid close" actions, not "lid open" actions. The chipset drivers (which you can download from the Dell Drivers and Downloads site) might correct this. If none are listed for Windows 7, the Vista chipset drivers should work.

You might have a yellow triangle in Device Manager for an unknown base system device. If you do, that would probably be the magnetic lid sensor/switch which would be corrected with the correct chipset drivers.

I believe the laptop won't wake up when it's in hibernate mode... only in sleep mode.

Good point and I should have been more clear. Unlike Sleep mode, Hibernate turns the computer completely off and needs to be resumed by pressing the "On" button.

No need to push the ON button, you can push any button and it wakes up. And i tried sleep mode and that solved the problem for me.

Stating Hibernate = bad , Sleep = Good.

Tho i personally havent had much sleep these past weekends. Been trying to make a 100% selfmade theme. It aint easy so i look on info Sergio and Grim slips out from time to time ^_^

I think I may have stumbled upon a solution. In Windows 7 Power Options, under the Balanced plan I selected "Put Computer to Sleep: Never."

Under Advanced Settings, I set "Hybrid Sleep" to "On."

When I close the lid, the computer shuts down and when I open the lid my desktop appears almost instantly. Eureka!

That's what I needed to happen.

Changing those settings may help some. But what worked for me wasn't a change to sleep or hibernate as I set mine to never do that when plugged in yet still had a full sleep occur once the lids was closed for more then a half hour. The issue is the hard drive being shut down after inactivity. The way to fix this is

Power options>Edit plan settings>Change advanced power settings>Hard disk>turn hard disk off after

Here is where you can set the time for it to turn off. You'll notice its set to something like 20 mins so no matter what type of sleep or hibernate you may want, after that time the hard disk will go down and you'll need a full system wake. Just change the shut down time to a couple of hours or days if you want, and it will wake up as soon as you lift lid since the hard drive never shut down and system will wake in seconds.

There is a way of doing this but it depends solely on manufacturer, windows does not have this option. I have a Sony Vaio VPCZ1 and under Vaio Control Center, Power Management, Lid Action Settings there is an option of what to do when the laptop lid is opened.
