    Arranging files in a window!

Ok ,Is there a default checkbox/list for how you want items to run , unlike vista i cant move subfolders around within a folder i.e. in my ebook collection i can't drag a folder to sit next to another it pings back to where it was. also i cant find checkboxes for showing content whilst dragging or not as the case may be!

I think i read somewhere earlier that you cant in Win7

You can click the "Arrange by" button in the top right though.

Vista had an option to 'Sort by none'. This allowed you to arrange files/folders any way you like. W7 does not have the option. Everything has to be sorted by something.

Which setting did you tick? This is what I want to do:
I have a folder w/127 pics, some look very similar & may be duplicates. I want to drag 1 from near the bottom up next to the 1 that may be its dublicate & have it stay there.

I did this in XP Pro. but cannot do it now that I'm running 7 Pro.

If you guys mean that you want to manually arrange icons inside the Windows Explorer window (assuming you've chosen "icons" in the view menu), then it is in fact impossible in Windows 7 - the system will not remember your arrangement after you close the window. You can only do this on your Desktop.

As an alternative there are many sorting options. If you search the forums there were several threads where people discussed the issue and several workarounds were suggested. However, if you really insist on manually arranging your icons in no particular order, then unfortunately you're out of luck.

Myself, I always use the "details" view, so I never even see the issue.

As I stated in your other thread, it's just not possible in 7 at this point, aside from renaming the files

This from Lisa a Support Engineer for Microsoft

"Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers Community.
The change in Windows 7 is by design, but if you feel that this is something you would like changed, please submit your suggestion at the Microsoft Connect site for feedback."

Maybe if enough people comment about this, Microsoft will actually do something about it.

    Hello Julian,

This might be what you are wanting. It will allow you to drag and drop files and folders in a Windows Explorer window how you like and not be auto arranged.

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable

This is to show the contents of a window while dragging or not.

Show Window Contents or Outline While Dragging

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn
