Not getting sound control or brightness controls, sony vaio

To start off, I had malware and adware in a few places, got that taken care of. My friend went through my services and disabled ones that he didn't see necessary. Now I can't control my sound level or brightness level, so my computer is on the darkest screen level. I work a lot on my computer, really need help with this ASAP.

Hello and welcome to the forums Buck.

I don't think disabling services is a good way to get rid of malware and adware if that's what you mean? If I was you I would do a system restore to before he disabled the services and see if that works.

Sorry, that's not exacltly what I meant. I was just saying that was our original goal, and then we wanted to stop a lot of unnecessary processes. So, with my limited computer logic, we must have stopped something that we shouldn't have. Is there a specific service that controls brightness and/or sound levels?

System Restore as suggested to before the changes were made.

No services are surplus in Win7 which is a featherlight OS compared to XP which may have actually needed Service edits.

The Services which control Sony function keys are discussed here in relation to a Clean Reinstall where function keys had stopped working without special Sony software:

There were 4 to install, setting utility series, Sony shared library, VAIO event service and finally VAIO control centre.

Thant is also the order, I have also attached links below in the correct order.

Setting Utility Series

Sony Shared Library

VAIO Event Service

VAIO Control Centre
If you cannot find these specific Services by typing Services.msc into Start Search box to check that they are enabled, or typing each Service into Start Search box to access and enable it, then you can reinstall them from the Sony Support Downloads webpage for your exact model number.

The optimizations and protection which work best for Win7 are discussed in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which compiles what's worked best in tens of thousands of installs we've helped with here. Until you can do a reinstall to finally enjoy Win7's full potential without the Sony bloatware, you can also Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

A system restore really intimidates me. I'm mostly ignorant, but shouldn't there be a known source of what provides that service so I could turn it back on?

A system restore is no big deal, it takes just a few mins. It's not like doing a clean install or anything.

There are four on most Vaio laptops which I gave you above. You can type them into Start Search box to access and enable them, or type Services.msc into Start Search box and look for each in the list to turn on and set to Automatic.

But I would use System Restore since there's no telling what else was done by "ignorant" service edits which haven't been needed since Vista or XP, and always have unintended consequences in Win7.

If all else fails you can reinstall the Services in the order listed. Each Vaio model should have those softwares available to download and install on its Support Downloads webpage.

Ok, would a system restore bring back the malware and adware potentially?

If you'd like for me to connect to look at your Services and re-enable those I mentioned, I might be able to spot them faster and can also optimize your System according to what's worked best in cases I've helped with here and in my tutorials.

Install TeamViewer Download at all defaults and then Private Message back to me My ID and password, leave TV open on desktop.

A good idea. Teamviewer is excellent. And Buck you won't go wrong with Greg. He is a top guy!
