Gateway notepad windows XP home edition

I hope you will forgive my minimal knowledge with computers in general. I just need to know if this notepad with a manufacture date of 09/11 has any use or value. It's looks brand new with very little of anything installed and seems to work perfectly.

It does have some value but you'll have to decide whether you want to put Windows 7 or Windows 8 on it, probably will cost about $100 or more/less to get a copy. Then there's the issue of having drivers available for the devices on the motherboard, if not part of Win7/Win8 would have to see if Gateway has them. There is a Win7 Compatibility site you can use to determine what will or will not work.

If push comes to shove with an Upgrade not being viable you could do as I did with a couple of Notebooks and put a version of Linux on it [I used Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon] instead of throwing it out.
WinXP support has been discontinued by Microsoft and only Vista could Upgrade over it, Win7/Win8 has to be a clean install.

Gateways are good laptops. I own a 2008 and a 2010 model and they always worked perfectly. I suggest you run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to see whether Windows 7 will work. Without a touch screen I would stay away from Windows 8. The cheapest Windows 7 is an OEM version. You probaly want the 32bit version but the 64bit costs the same.

Might add, only the Professional version of WinXP was available as 64-bit, other versions as 32-bit. 64-bit hardware can run a 32-bit Operating System but not the other way around.
