Excessive Intermittent/Random screen freezes and internet disconnects

Memory: 2GB RAM
Hard Drive: 320 GB Internal Hard Drive
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 Driver version 179.67

HERE's THE PROBLEM:
At seemingly random times - most often when I click on something (anywhere) - the screen will start to "freeze". Sometimes it starts by open windows not responding in any way, then progresses to the cursor freezing. This freezed state will last up to a few minutes, then suddenly unfreeze. Frozen windows will indicate "X not responding" on the title bar. This will sometimes occur many times in a row, for hours at a time, with only a few minutes of normal use between freezes (example, 2 minutes frozen, 2 minutes unfrozen, repeat for several hours).
When the screen and/or cursor are frozen, if I move the mouse and attempt to move windows or click a web link or do anything else, (as if the cursor was responding) all of these "unseen" actions will suddenly "catch up" and quickly occur (within a second) after it unfreezes. If I happen to be watching a video on Youtube, when it unfreezes the video has advanced as if it had not been frozen.
Usually, if the freeze was long enough the internet "disconnects" when the screen freezes as indicated by any program I was connected to live on the internet such as an online game. although I'm not sure what's happening there because the wifi signal indicator never changes and network and sharing center doesn't show any problem.
I recently had a hard drive failure, and when it was replaced I had Windows 7 installed instead of Vista, which I prefer. The problem became worse after this. Ubuntu seems to run with only a very occasional freeze (maybe every hour max).
I have noticed if using a web browser (Explorer or Chrome) that the status at the bottom of the window often says "Waiting for cache..." when the freeze occurs. Chrome will show a small error window "The following pages have become unresponsive...".

Thinking this could be a memory problem, I have watched the performance tab of the task manager, but it shows no anomalies, and often memory is only 70% or so. I tried using a 16GB USB memory drive enabled with "ReadyBoost" but I don't this has changed anything. I have also completed multiple memory checks and hard drive disk checks and defrags without any effect.
The most bothersome thing is it seems to happen completely randomly, and often many times in a row for several hours, nothing affects it, and when I watch the performance tab on the Task Manager it doesn't indicate any changes during the freezes.
This has caused me a lot of hardship, any help would be appreciated. I realize this is an older computer but I need to make it last for financial reasons. I can provide whatever info you need.

Sorry to hear your computer is randomly freezing.
Have you checked to see if a nasty infection of malware is on your computer? This is most probably always the cause.
