Can ping ip address but not google.com

I am working on a friend's vists 32 bit machine. I realize that if I can ping an IP, but not the we address, it is most likely a DNS issue. I have done sfc /scannow ipconfig /flushdns and tried using googles's public servers. Still can only get to google by ip.

What else can I try, short of wiping it? There are no virus, no add ons and I have reset all settings multiple times. Renamed host file, nothing. The only thing I haven't done is get into his router. IS that where the issue lies? Why would I be able to ping an IP address, but when I type google.com I get a "cannot display webpage.

I have done most of this. When it opens, it will go to AOL, but not all sites work. Google, for example, does not. I can get to it by using the IP address, but typing the google.com shows nothing and doesn't ping

Yes, tried to set it to lowest, and reset default settings. If type oldppas.com (forexample) I can get there, but the main culprit is google.com, cannot ping that address , only IP

I uninstalled all antivirus when attempting this. Not sure why avast would block google.com and not the IP address. Could it be a router setting?

It varies. AOL will open right up, so will Yahoo, but if I attempt to do a search from the AOL search or yahoo search, nothing. I was able to go to oldapps and get revouninstaller so internet works.

Hope you were careful on what you allowed revouninstaller to add to that free install.. if you did not uncheck some boxes you have some programs that will hinder you ..
