Rebooted the computer and all my desktop icons turned white

I rebooted the computer and when I got my desktop back all the cons for third party apps are the default white icon as you can see in my screenshot.

I have tried re-building the icon cache by following the instructions on the forum Icon Cache - Rebuild

I can rebuild from a 3 day old image backup but I don't want to have to do that! Anyone got any more tips for trying to work it out - I tried to change one or two manually using the properties/change icon but that did not stay changed for some reason.

you could try doing a system restore to a previous point where your icons were working; this is my only suggestion other than to try re-building the icon cache again
