These files seem to be created every time I shut down or restart my computer and reside in Windows/Temp folder. They are only 1kb in size so I'm obviously not concerned about disk space but I would like to understand what is creating these multiple files and why?

I've looked in to what creates these files and the best I can come up with is the 'Customer Experience Improvement Program'. I have selected "no I do not want to participate" in Windows.

I've also read that these files may be related to a similar service in Windows Live Messenger, but I do not have Messenger and never have had it. Should I install Windows Live just to opt out of some 'Improvement Program'?

Hi Matt, welcome to the Seven Forums.

SQM files are used by Microsoft to collect user data, more precisely what install options were used and so on. The files are harmless.

This MSDN article gives an example of Micrsoft's usage of SQM data: Windows SDK download and SQM data - Jason Sacks's Windows SDK blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
