Why won't my DVD RW drive (D) read blank discs?

This just started happening recently and I don't know why. I am using the same discs that have worked before and everything looks good in device manager. It tells me my driver is up to date and working properly. It will read older discs that I've put files on but when I try to make a DVD it just keeps telling me I need to insert a blank disc when there is already one inserted. When I put in the disc the drive will make the noises like its trying to read it for a long time. Any ideas? I'm clueless???

*Also I first noticed this after upgrading from Vista to 7

If you DVD drive is very old, you might need a new one. I replaced mine a short time ago. It was making a noise when it would spin. They just wear out.

Its not very old and I really rarely use it. I don't think that would be the case....plus like I said, it will read discs with content on them...it just wont recognize a blank

snarfman, bigmck is a member with almost 4,000 posts and he has suggested the answer to your problem. The drive is most likely deflective or you have a bad bunch of blanks (highly unlikely). You can get a DVD Burner drive for under $20.

I've had optical drives fail after six months. Today's drives are cheap, but they just don't last. They're now considered disposable. You get what you pay for.

So i bought a new burner drive and its still not recognizing i have a blank disc inside....i know it not the actual disc because I've used them before and have tried over 15 of them. I keeps telling me to insert a blank disc when there is already one in the drive.

Post a screenshot od exactly WHAT is telling you to insert a disc. Are you using a DVD RW or a DVD + or - disc? What are you trying to do? We need more information.

Try using the dvd in another computer.
What exactly was the burner you bought.
Could you post a site of the burner.
Could you post a site of the DVD's you are using.
