General question on how to continue with Windows 7

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. My PC is 5 years old.

This is what I have done so far. I wanted your suggestions on how to continue.

So I bought a new hard disk and loaded Win 7. Then I downloaded all the patches and such. My PC frozen and unusable. Not even the mose worked. The only option left was pulling the cord. It was that bad. So then I tried again. Wiped the hard disk clean. Loaded Win 7. This time I did not download the latest patches. My PC worked for several days. Then one day when I turned off the PC, I saw a message on the screen that said "Don't shut off the PC, downloading patches." Then the following day when I started my computer, again. Same problem. My PC was froozen and unusable. Nothing worked. I couldn't get to tash manager. So I pulled the plug. Again.

I don't know how to proceed. At this moment, I feel like giving up on Win 7. It seems that if get the latest patches my PC will die. But if I don't patch my PC, then malware will get in. The reaon I wanted Win 7 was to protect myself from malware. But a fully pached Win 7 kills my PC. At this point I feel like Win 7 is not for me. So I considered going back to XP.

Opinoins wanted. So what do you all think. I am not sure how to continue. At this point I feel like screw it back to XP.

what patches are you referring to ,I have installed win7 maybe a 100 times or more on different computer and have never install patches ,just drivers and software ,so when you install win7 are you doing it from a dvdd or from a oem recovery partition on the computers harddrive

I recently had to re-install Windows 7 Pro x64. Even though I used an sp 1 iso, the updates were about 700-800MB. I have a fast connection and the pc was an i7, but the update process still took about 3 hours. With a slower pc and ISP, it would take longer.

Part of the update process is rebooting several times, and if you interrupt this (switch off) it can cause problems. If you were using a pre sp1 disk, there'd be even more updates. Just let Windows do its stuff - the message 'configuring - do not turn off the computer' is there for a reason.

Once your Windows is up to date, its just a matter of getting the monthly updates on 'patch Tuesday' - 2nd Tuesday of the month.

I think by "patches" the OP is referring to Windows updates, some of which come automagically...

You could try accepting the important updates first before accepting the optional updates. With the optional updates try excluding the optional driver updates, at least initially and others that aren't relevant to your setup.

Edit: I always view updates before allowing them to be installed and I never allow graphics driver updates.

Where did you get this Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit disk from ?

There is no reason windows 7 should freeze up after installing updates.

Are you letting windows update install the video drivers ?

Your PC isn't dying, you just dont' have a good install yet.

Try these same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which compile everything that works best in tens of thousands of installs we've helped with here since beta.

You should in fact run all Windows Updates but something you're doing before that is likely defeating your install, like not deleting all partitions or using dodgy media. Where did you get it? How is it burned?

    Thanks for the reply.

    How do I control updates?

This is explained in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 in detail.

Everything that works best to get and keep a perfect install is in that tutorial. You will get and keep a perfect install to the exact extent you follow those steps.

Feel free to ask back any questions to clarify any step, or if you have problems.

Is there some reason why you can't do that?

    type
    Windows updates
    in search box
select change settings then select "select download update but let me choose whether to install them"

You still haven't answered the question:
"Where did you get this Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit disk from ?"
