    Couple Of Problems

    Help in short...

    I have two problems

    First:
When trying to set up a back up nothing happens. I go into System And Security>Backup And Restore> then click on the link "Set up back" and nothing happens.

    Second:
I open windows explorer then click on "New folder" menu option and again nothing happens, although right click new folder is no problem.

Neither causes an error message to be displayed, I have checked the events log and cannot see anything to state there was a problem. Is the lack of working functionality down to my version (Home Premium) or is this a problem.

Any help sorting this out is greatly appreciated.

PS hope this post is in the right section.

    Cheers everyone.

Try running sfc /scannow in command promt, you have to run command promt in administrator mode,so start>accessories>right click command promt>run as admin.

This show find and fix corrupt files.

Start up repair is another way of doing this, although i think sometimes one gets a result and one doesnt.

Yes and if sfc /scannow doesn't fix it, you may want to try doing a repair install. A repair install reinstalls windows 7 again but leaves your current programs, settings, and data intact. Nevertheless, it's still a good idea to have critical data backed up before doing such procedures. Hopefully, perhaps you have things backed up from before you installed W7 in the first place.

I ran the sfc /scannow and it said that there wasn't anything to repair. Any other thoughts?

If the repair install you mention will really not undo the current installed programs I am an extremely happy camper. Every thing I have read suggests that one would have to reinstall all programs. I sincerely hope I have misinterpreted for I feel sure I am going to replace my MB after the first of the year and don't look forward to reinstalling every thing.

Thank you for letting me barge in here but this is important to me.

Read the linked tutorial from my post above. What is stated in there is correct. Repair install is not supposed to disturb installed apps, app settings and data. There is no controversy about that. I've done it and it works as advertised. But things can always go wrong so . . .

It's always a good idea to back stuff up because under the best of circumstances, things can always go wrong with computers and there is no substitute for having a good back up of your data, and eventually, a copy of a nicely set up system which includes installed apps, settings and data. But while installing and getting set up, a back up of at least important data can be a lifesaver if something goes wrong.

Thank you. Seeing you say 'I have doneit" gives me great confidence. I will try it next week on my laptop. Yes, I agree that having good backups make life so much better.

    Thanks again.

You're welcome. Good luck with it and I hope it makes your system run better. One additional point I would note is that I have found that my main security apps, specifically Comodo Firewall and Eset Anti Virus, usually do have to be reinstalled to return them to working properly after an upgrade or repair install. In fact, I sometimes actually uninstall them before doing such a procedure. With Eset at least, it's a breeze to save one's configuration settings and restore them after reinstalling. I don't recall ATM if Comodo is as easy, but I usually just help Comodo retrain itself upon a reinstall.
