Problem With Restarts After August Microsoft Updates

    Hi all
After performing last months updates as usual i was asked the restart the laptop which i did,it powered down as normal but then seemed to hang with a black screen, also the DVD drive did not spin like it normally does on a start up,i left everything for a while but it was obvious it was not going to restart so i did a hard restart.I have read up on the problems reported from last months updates but so far have not seen anything written about restart problems.

Now at random times i get the same problem but it is random,i get no error messages and the hard restart works fine.Last night after completing this months updates it stuck again and i had to do a hard restart.

I have not changed any drivers recently or added hard ware,no software was added before last months updates and i am having no other obvious problem with the computer so i thought i would throw it out to members here to see if i can get help with this small but annoying problem.I like to keep things running sweet if i can.

I had the same problem on my desktop with restarts. In my case it was caused by an external hard drive (My passport). After uninstalling it, and re-installing it the problem has not reappeared. But that just might be an unrelated coincidence.

Thanks for replying akjudge,i dont have an external attached when having these problems, after reading more about the update problems i searched for the problem KB's and only found the one relating to the rubel sign update,i have removed this but again when windows asked me to restart the laptop froze.I will monitor the situation now and see if the rubel KB was the problem.

It happens on shutdown? Or really in bootup phase?

    Do I understand correctly?

    1. shutdown machine
    2. boot machine
No problem at all when you do that?

But a reboot (restart win7) gives you the problem. But not always. Do I describe it as it is?

Do you see the BIOS Screen prior to black screen? Windows7 animation prior to black screen? Explain when the black screen appears. Do you see a text cursor then? A mouse pointer?

You do understand correctly Kaktussoft, normal starting and shutting down is fine,it is just restarting i sometimes get the proble,i never had a problem until i installed the August updates which is when i first experienced the freeze when windows told me it had to restart.

I see no bios screen or anything for that matter, during normal restart the computer will shut down as normal, after a pause of a few seconds i heard the DVD drive whir and get the Asus splash screen then the windows seven screen, with the problem windows shuts down and thats where it ends, the power light is still on and i can hear the cooling fan running but windows makes no attempt to load, there is no flashing cursor or mouse pointer just a black screen.
