UNrelocate User Profile Prior to Upgrading
When I decided to build a new Win 7 computer and use an SSD drive for the system drive, it seemed to me that relocating the User profiles to a secondary spinning drive made sense.
I followed Kari's tutorial here, which explains how to accomplish the goal using Sysprep in Audit Mode --> User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation
The tutorial was easy to follow and my system has been running happily with Windows on my SSD C:\ drive and all the profiles on spinning D:\Users (that includes D:\Program Data as well).
Recently, however, I saw the following article by Ed Bott, which is a bit disturbing if I ever decide that I want to upgrade the Win 7 box to Win 8 (or whatever comes next) --> Don't move your Windows user profiles folder to another drive
So ... assuming that Ed Bott is correct, has anyone either figured a way around the problem described in the article or come up with a procedure to move everything back to the C: drive (I expect that the latter will be essentially impossible, given all the links scattered throughout the registy)?
