OK so you downloaded it to your windows 8 pc, after that you inserted a blank formatted flash drive, then you went to the file on your windows 8pc & double clicked it,it opened & asked you where to instal it,you browed to the flashdrive and it installed onto that flash drive. you then took it to the windows 7 pc inserted it booted up the PC it booted from the USB but all you got was the safe mode screen ?

The key to boot a disk or stick on HP is ESC. Tap the ESC key at boot with the media inserted. Then when it prompts you to choose select Boot Menu, then the device.

Let us know how this goes.

If the stick still will not boot then try formatting it again with the special tool to create Windows Defender, Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to write or burn the Win7 Home Premium x64 SP1 English Official ISO download to use for repairs or if necessary do a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

The scan resulted in 11 threats on my computer. I cleaned what I could but some were not removed.

Ill continue the suggestions as it was listed

I have not been able to get the safe mode with command prompt to work. (It goes to the password screen) and not to the command prompt

Question
is there any way I can copy my data from the hard drive than (what might be the inevitable) doing a clean install

I have most of my data backed up on 25 GB BD-R disks (about 25 disks) so the only data I would be losing is from the time I backed up (about 10 months ago) until now

I would still want to have another bootable AV to confirm it is cleaned up, such as the Avira CD I linked earlier or the Defender you already made now that you know how to boot a disk.

Then see if it can boot into Safe Mode to do the Malwarebytes scan which is most powerful.

Then once disinfection is confirmed by second scan, try running SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker if necessary from the Win7 disk System Recovery Options Command Prompt as shown in SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot.

Once System files are confirmed intact, confirm the Partition Marked Active
is the 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) or C, then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

Report back results.

Yes, it explains how to rescue your data in both Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

and Step 3 Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Study the other preparatory steps as there may be other needed data to rescue like Bookmarks or Mail.

Then if you will stick with only the steps, tools and methods in the tutorial you will get and keep a perfect install for as long as you do.

I should add that I havent been able to burn any disk or image using my laptop because Nero will pop up and I dont have a functioning version of Nero.

Then I remembered Burnaware Free which is an easy program to understand and use.

I know there is Imgburn but I havent really ever used it.

So Im going back to bootdisk webpage mentioned earlier. Booting with usb hasnt helped

The tool to burn ISO to DVD or flash stick is one you install and run and has nothing to do with whatever pops up when you open a file. Those are controlled in Control Panel>Default Programs and would be set to Windows Image Burner (best for CD's) by default if you weren't still running the bloatware install.

I was diverted today with replacing toilet tank

I tried a few rescue disks (such as Kaspersky Rescue CD, Avira Antivir Rescue Disk, AVG Rescue CD) which didnt work

I was in the midst of "rescue your data in both Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot" when i had to work on the toilet

I was able to get to this section . . .

. . . . but it takes you to this screen

Ive only tried system repair and system restore.

So i can get to command prompt which I hadnt been able to do

What do you mean those Rescue disks "didn't work." Please tell us exactly how each disk was burned, how you attempted to boot it and what resulted.

Which method are you using to rescue your data. There are two provided, one using the Win7 disk to Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console
and the other requires burning to CD with Windows Image Burner Paragon Rescue Kit Free Edition Free Download - Softpedia free CD.

Good news (kind of)
I had not tried the bottom option because I thought I didnt have a system image. I was thinking ISO file and mixing it up.

I was following this page . . .
Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

and I get to step 7 . . . .

My question is it wants me to copy my 'user' folder. Where do I paste it to. Here are my options . . .
