Gateway MS2274 will not display image

I looked and looked online for a solution. I got this laptop yesterday and would like to fix it and use it for school, as it was given to me for free if i got the other persons data off. They said they dropped it or something, i cant quite remember. There is no case damage from a drop. I tried reseating the RAM, taking out hard drive, CD Drive and all that and then trying to boot it. Still nothing. I hooked up my main desktop display but i know you usually need to press a key combo or something like that.

I think its the mobo thats bad, which i can replace myself, but before i spend $70+ i want to make sure i know its the mobo or what is causeing the problem. What do you folks think? Thanks in advanced!

EDIT: I did get the image to display a couple of times, but only in POST, if that helps. Maybe a bad inverter or bulb? I cant really see it even with a flashlight held up to it.

Most Notebooks have a VGA port on one edge, a blue 15-pin socket. It's used for Projectors and can be used for an external monitor. There's usually a key combination of Fn and an Fx key such as F5 or F8, etc., that toggles between the LCD panel, the external monitor or both at the same time. Try that to see if the computer is otherwise working.

I tried both the HDMI and VGA ports on the laptop and pressed FN F4 and just F4 since thats the key used. Nothing happened.

Unfortunately it is quite easy to damage parts in a Notebook/Laptop when they are dropped. I was given one that had the hard drive damaged plus a chunk broken from the display cover panel. Replaced the drive and it work so replaced the cover, nice computer for the cost of a used drive and $38 for the cover.
