    WTM svchost.exe

    Hi,

I have a process that has a description as Host Process for Windows Services and it takes up around 230,000 - 300,000 K of memory. A friend of mine suggested that it might be a leak but I don't know what to do if it is or a malware/virus. But I have scanned with malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy and mse and none have come up with anything.

Uuh feel free to ask for more info if you feel like that this is not sufficient enough.

Huh, so it ain't at all weird that one is taking up so much while all the other ones are under 30,000 K?

    It's such a small amount I wouldn't worry.

svchost processes runs one or more services. A process that runs 10 services would use more memory. You can run this in a command prompt to see them:

    tasklist /svc /FI "imagename eq svchost.exe"

This might also be of interest: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...s-50-av-s.html
Select the svchost process that uses high ram and follow step 8 in the Tutorial to check all dll files on Virustotal.

    I don't think there is a problem.

The memory usage of an individual process in a modern OS is HIGHLY (maybe HUGELY would be more accurate) dynamic. If that were understood there would be far fewer complaints about memory usage. It will vary according to how much memory is installed, what the process is doing, what other processes are doing, and more. The memory usage can vary by a factor of 100 or more. I have seen this.

As for the svchost.exe process (Host Process for Windows Services):
Each instance of this process acts as a host for one or more system services. Services spend most of their time waiting for something to do but will at other times be very busy and might consume a large amount of memory. One thing, among others, that can cause high usage is a Windows Update.

My 32 bit Windows 7 system runs 24/7 and has 4 GB RAM, 1 GB being used by a virtual machine that runs most of the time. That leaves about 2.5 GB available for other uses. One instance of svchost.exe has a peak memory usage of 584,968 KB. If more memory were available I would expect that to be even higher.

    I don't consider this abnormal.

When memory is plentiful, and with 8 GB I would expect that to be the case most of the time, Windows will let processes use pretty much whatever memory they want. Why not, better that the memory be put to a useful purpose than sit idle. But if there is memory pressure when a large application is opened this usage will be automatically trimmed back, drastically if necessary.

Like a posted before it's normal.
If one starts worrying about ever little kb your going to go bonkers.
I really don't know exactly what is going on in the background that we don't see but it is constantly changing.
