Windows 7 reigns for the desktop user
I think MS has a problem. It will be very tough to top Windows 7 for the desktop user.
I run 8.1 and 10 and they are both fine systems. In terms of function, footprint and speed they are probably superior to Windows 7. Still they feel funny on the desktop.
With 10 there is some progress except for that ridiculous start. All they did is to squeeze the 8.1 start into the right pane and the Apps into the left pane. Considering all the hype that was made about the 'new' start, that is a pretty poor implementation. I immediately toggled it to the 8.1 style. At least there I can read things.
I have 8.1 and 10 in virtual and two systems that came with 8.1 out of the box. No problem running those, but all my 'workhorse' PCs have enough muscle and will remain on Windows 7 until they come up with something I really like.
