Why does my username suddenly have .V2 suffix, and how to remove it?

Just a few days ago I found that my system suddenly had a new duplicate of my username with a .V2 suffix (e.g, along with MyUser there's a MyUser.V2)!

I've read up on this, and to the best of my knowledge none of the circumstances that Microsoft states would produce this new .V2 copy apply to me at all. For instance, I NEVER logon to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 machines, I've never copied a user profile anywhere at all, and I've never shared a user profile. So why the heck do I have a .V2 username on just one of my Windows 7 machines? Is there any way to find out?

In any case, I very much wish to delete this .V2 username, but I don't know what the risks or complications are. The modified date of the .V2 user folder is more recent than the original. So should I just copy any new files and any files with more recent dates from the .V2 folder tree back into the original tree and then completely delete the .V2 tree and username, or what? Does anyone know?

What gives?

Thanks.

Have you connected your PC to a domain? Asking, because creating a roaming profile with the username followed by .V2 can result from that.

You should be able to go into Control Panel and simply remove the .V2 user.

No, never! Nothing like that at all. But thanks for the info.

Great. I'll just synch the two folder trees and then delete the .V2

Thanks again.

Well, I did as I wrote in my previous post, but the .V2 suffix on my username keeps coming back!!

I can't find any way to stop it!

Naturally, I performed a malware sweep with maximum settings, both with my own permanent anti-virus as well as with MBAM, but nothing was discovered.

Again, I never connect to a domain and I never connect to remote servers and I never use the HomeGroup stuff. Just old-fashioned workgroup-based file and folder sharing on my local network with two other computers also running 64-bit Windows 7 SP1.

This has turned out to me a much more difficult problem than I expected. Does anyone have any suggestions?
