index rebuild...anyone know how to speed up

Have seen countless reports on forums of how slow the Windows index takes to build/rebuild in W7.

Been trying for over a week. I let the first one run for several days and it was barely moving. I never shut the pc off (new ASUS PC). My old HP running windows XP pro had the same slow issue.

enabled "disable index backoff" and didn't seem to move any quicker. At the rate it was going, it was literally going to take several weeks, maybe months for it to complete.

I restarted the rebuild again this morning after removing a lot of old email and deleting as much as I could from Outllook and when I first started the rebuild I saw the progress go from 1 to 99 to 533 in less than a minute, I was ecstatic !!!

... well here it is a good 8 hours later and status says " 1,079 items indexed" and when I check the indexing status in Outlook it says 39,614 items remaining.

My pst is +-6GB and i have a fair amount of files/items selected, but nothing should take this long to run.

Has anyone figured out how in the world to build this index quicker?

Do you by any chance have Paperport installed?

I do. Paperport image printer- properties say Nuance image printer driver.

I don't select this whenever printing but I don't know if any software I run requires this.

One of the printers attached to my PC is an all in one - Brother MFC 7860dw that I use mostly for scanning. It's a backup printer if I need it and used to be a fax, but recently I went to VOIP and now have efax.

Maybe the paperport is needed for this?

I have found that Paperport does its own indexing and Windows indexing slows to a crawl.

I didn't need Paperport, so I uninstalled it. I did not wait to see if this would improve over time.

    Paperport is a document manager.

    Thanks I will try that.

So how is it that an hour ago Outlook said that there were 39,614 items to be indexed and now its says 39,706.

I've only received a few emails.

Update on what I did for others reference:

I deleted the paper port printer from devices
removed the paper port software in programs
    restarted the computer
    enabled "disable index backoff"
Then started the index rebuild again.

It is humming along at 25k items indexed after just 10 minutes or so. Huge, huge improvement- thank you.

Something to think about for future reference. You don't need to Index files on an SSD. Here is the difference in read/write: SSD vs HDD

And this is on just a USB 2 Sata II 3GB mobo. Those numbers on the SSD will increase by 40% when I get my new USB3 Sata III 6GB mobo.
