User Profile Service failed and can't get into Safe Mode

So this morning, pulling up my home PC, received a message:

    (Dell Inspiron 550)

"The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded."

I do have a "Guest" profile that I can get into, although it is not administrative, and I never use it.

Searching the net has various solutions but all require booting into safe mode. (F8, although on my PC it seems that F2 and F12 are the options it displays). Regardless, it seems that the keyboard doesn't function during boot, because I can't get any of them (tried F5 as well from another post) to work -- goes into windows every time. So I can't change to boot from another source either...

I was able to get into Windows startup repair, by powering down the computer before windows completing booting and rebooting. The keyboard still was not recognized, but default was going into repair so got there.

Repair function found no issues (or couldn't resolve). Got into the main menu (keyboard working fine at this point), and tried to use an earlier restore point, but got message that c:\ drive wasn't found.

    Help appreciated!

    Hello Jon,

Check to see if you may be able to use any of the "In Preparation" options to either boot into Safe Mode or the built-in Administrator account to be able to do the rest of the tutorial to fix this error. :)

User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately I can't seem to get to any of the "In Preparation" steps, as (not sure if related), on booting, it is not seeming to recognize the keyboard to do a F2/F8/F12 to either get into Safe Mode, or boot from CD.

Regardless of what I do it only goes into the normal windows startup.

I do not have another Administrator account, and can only access the guest account.

    UPDATE: Problem Solved:

    1) Removed the Keyboard/Mouse from the KVM switch and connected directly. That let me go into safe mode.

    Thanks!
