Open With - Choose Default Program Error

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and when I try to open files using Right Click > Open With and I select Choose Default Program I keep getting an error message like the one below, I copied the picture link from another thread when searching for an answer so disregard the C:\Program Data etc in the address window.

Does anybody know how to solve this issue?

    Thanks.

Check this tutorial by Brink, you'll likely find fix for the particular file association(s) that is/are broken - you didn't mention which one(s)...

Default File Type Associations - Restore

It is not one particular file, Open With will not let me select "Choose default program" in the first place to make a program selection.

What if you right click on file, select properties> general tab, opens with, click on change button and see if you can change it from there. I would also give this a go as what yu describe is not normal, SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker . It may need to be run several times to repair if it finds anything wrong, with a reboot between each run.
Have you scanned for malware and such like? Tried system restore to before problem began?

I was just about to post something similar...run sfc /scannow & scan for malware. Good tip to try properties> general tab, opens with, click on change button. I'm not a fan of system restore.

subyroo. Open Control Panel, then select Default Programs, then select Set Your Default Programs. When that opens click on any of the listed programs you wish to set & then from the 2 items listed select the defaults you want.

    try this
I've spent days on getting this, finally found this reg file and my problem was corrected. I was having the issue that whenever I right-clicked on a file, any file, chose "open with" and then clicked on choose default program, that error message would pop up. Thanks so much for posting.
