Welcome to the forum.

By default Windows does little logging, and nothing like what you want. Doing so could consume a large amount of disk space in a relatively short period of time, and negatively impact performance as well. All you will be able to get is the date and time of last modification.

If you must keep date/time logs in txt files, type them; or in notepad you may hit F5 to automatically generate a time strap at the cursors position.

Optionally, if the very first line of the text file is '.LOG', each time you open the text file with notepad, a time strap will automatically be appended to the end of the file for you.

If you need then know how many times the text file has been modified, I suggest you use some script to count the number of time straps in the file.

Windows 7 can do file and folder auditing but this is disabled by default. You have to be very selective or the logs will become very large and performance will be impaired. Of course there is no software that can tell you of modifications made prior to auditing being configured.

I'm wondering how useful knowing how many times something has been altered would be.

Every time it is changed (altered) you could change the Name.

Example:

My Book
My Book 2
My Book 3
ect.
