    Delayed Response after Hybrid Sleep

I've looked through the forum and the Internet for someone with a similar problem but have had no luck.

No apps launch for about 30 seconds after my desktop wakes from hybrid sleep.

If I try to launch IE from the keyboard or click on the IE icon on the taskbar it will take about 30 seconds before it launches. This is for any app including Windows Explorer. The mouse pointer moves around the desktop but I can't launch anything for the first 30 seconds after resuming from hybrid sleep.

I can hear the computer accessing the 2 DVD drives and the external eSATA drive and once the spinup noises subside then the apps will launch.

Is this normal or should I be checking for something that is causing this delay?

    TIA

    UPDATE: From the Event Viewer:

    Code:
    Log Name: System
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Date: 4 Nov 09 4:57:36 PM
    Event ID: 7011
    Task Category: None
    Level: Error
    Keywords: Classic
    User: N/A
    Computer: Phoenix
    Description:
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service.

Not normal especially with the timeout. something external is slow to respond like a usb device or a bad cable. You should search for the shelldectionservice on google and check in your services to make sure it is set to automatic. to check type services.msc in search and go to the service.

Good luck and let us know if you need help

Thanks Ken. I've narrowed it down to the external hard drive. If it's disconnected then apps respond immediately after the system resumes from hybrid sleep (shell detection service was set to Auto).
