When she gets her laptop there won't be any use for the hardrive
With any computer you should have an external hardrive. A PC without an external disk is like a car without brakes. Where are you going to put your images when you have no external disk - especially on a laptop.

PS- I don't think a chromebook is such a swift device. You can get laptops for appr. the same price.

When you do a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 one of the last steps is to save a Backup image of your completed install so you never have to do it again, just reimage the hard drive from the stored image on another drive using the booted Win7 installation media.

You'll want to wipe the drive before sending back. I don't know the return policy, but they might not accept it with any data one it. I know you said the install failed, but it might have written something to the disk.

Wipe the drive and check the return policy.

Image is just another word for backup. It's a different kind of backup that takes a snapshot of a drive and writes to a proprietary or standard file format.

Use command prompt with those commands:

Quote:
Diskpart
List disk
Select disk n (where n is the number that was given for your disk in List disk)
Clean
Exit
And if you use Clean All, it writes zeros on the disk. But that takes a lot longer.

Thanks whs

@crashhat: Be very certain you select the correct drive.

Diskpart is not forgiving. There is no confirm. There is no undo.

Triple check that the disk you select is in fact the one you want to wipe.

So she ended up getting the same laptop as me, but her's isn't the touch screen version. There's a power option for the sleep button, but there's no sleep button on the laptop
