First Win Update, No Prompt to Choose Which Updates to Install

Hello, I'm updating a fresh Win 7 Pro x64 install for the first time. I manually started Win Update by selecting it through Internet Explorer.

Well, after selecting "check for updates," the updater proceeded to find many, and then I was given the option to download, which I did. From there it downloaded and attempted to install the updates without first prompting me to choose which ones I wanted to install.

Did I miss something? How can I screen the updates prior to installing them?

    TIA

If you didn't go into the Important and Optional screens separately to choose via the links provided then it probably started and is installing the Important. You really need all of them since sometimes important drivers and patches to make your hardware or software work right are queued under Optional. I install everything except Bing in my installs and never had any issues which are one in a million.

So after it installs that batch, Check for Updates again and see what's offered. But first enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3).

Okay, it seems I missed the option to review prior to choosing to download, correct?

Also, what happened to "critical" updates? Is everything now either "Important" or "Optional"

Critical will be under Important. You can click the links in blue to see both categories.

It seems I missed the option to review prior to choosing to download, correct?

Lastly, SP1 is showing up as a 9.1MB update, but in my System Information, it shows I am already running Win 7 with SP1?

Go ahead and install it since it's probably a piece of SP1 it can't find and is trying to reinstall. SP1 in Win7 comes in pieces and may be almost entirely done in prior Updates with just a small cleanup Update to label it done.

While you're doing that be sure to look at the other tips for setting up and keeping a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7

Thanks, I really appreciate the help!

One more try on this one, my original question:

It seems I missed the option to review prior to choosing to download, correct?

Yes, as I said you'd need to click the Blue link to review both Important and Optional Updates or it will only install the Important.
