Assign proper application to OPEN .ad4 files

I want to open some files like myfilename.ad4.

    But...........I have Adobe reader installed.

Adobe reader appears to define itself as the application to load these files (ad?).

I have my security permissions as both administrator and only user set to allow almost anything.

I have an application (Airport Design Editor) which WILL open these files, but I browse, find, and then
cannot fix the application to replace the Adobe program.

    Thoughts?
