How to add to RAR archive 40k files without using windows search.

Okay, I think I may have figured out a method, and a simple one. I simply created a dummy rar archive with only one file in it and put on desktop. I then selected all the files that came up in search results using the 3rd party app and simply dragged them over into the archive and it worked. Or is working rather, however I noticed the compression is 27 percent where as usually its around 12 percent. Also there isn't an option to split volumes into segments whenever I dragged. Otherwise its 44k files and weighs 150 GB!!. Hopefully the ration will run down some and I can split the archive when finished.

Ratio is around 13 percent now!

How do I select only an external drive within everything?

Wait I think I got it. Now will see if it will let me add to archive 40 k files. Some apps will crash after only 5 k!

Just selected them all and right clicked and its been hanging for a few minutes I know alt a is the shortcut to add to archive for winrar, will try simply adding to archive via a shortcut to bypass the right click menu entirely, maybe that'll help..

Just tried Evertying again and its still a no go. Right click menu won't even show up to add to archive if even 20 k are selected!!!

Just tried again, and it worked with 20k, will try again and see if the pop up menu comes back up when selected all.

Well, if you were going to split the RAR/ZIP files into parts anyway (in order that they didn't produce a 150GB single file), why don't you just manually select smaller sub-groups of the complete list presented by Everything (say to be under 20K files at a time, since you say that worked OK), and just manually produce your separate RAR/ZIP files yourself in that way.

Just select the first file at the top, then scroll down a ways (unfortunately there's no file number column so it's just a guess on your part how far to go), and select the last file in the group while holding down the SHIFT key. This will light up all the files in between these first and last selected files. Now you can right-click and do the WinRAR thing.

Then rinse, repeat, as many smaller <20K subsets as you need.

The end result will be several self-contained RAR/ZIP files instead of one monster (or even automatically broken into parts by WinRAR), but that's what you wanted anyway, right? It's just that you drive to produce it, rather than having WinRAR divide it for you.

Yes that thought occured to me too. Thanks for your info and suggestions. It really helped alot. Everything is a fine program and it allowed me to select them all and I'm archiving them now. I'm going to be making copies of the files so I was thinking of Splitting the results in mini self contained rar files too! I'm worried with so many rar files if one piece is missing or corrupt the files won't be accessible. I might break it up into 8 parts and have each rar no higher than 4 gigs. This will suffice until I get a blu ray burner. Once I do I won't even bother compressing. I'd just burn them as is into 50 GB segments on a DVD. Cheers bro and thanks for your help!!!

That's really what needs to be emphasized here, that Everything is a superb alternative to Windows Search, for the 99.9% of the time when all we want to do is search on full or partial folder/file names, either on all local drives or perhaps just one local drive. It presents the hit-list as you type, potentially refining the list as you type more and more characters (or add "*" wildcard characters).

Once the "hit list" is returned, you can then sort on any column heading if you'd like the list to be presented in an alternative order (i.e. not name sequence) if that would provide some additional info you need to narrow down your search results. But really this is just a re-sort of the file name search that Everything is so good and fast at.

And of course, if you want another alternative to Windows Search you might try Search My Files. This is a utility for searching based on more than just file name, and also is not based on any realtime-maintained index (as Everything is, as you add, delete, rename files). Rather it is simply an on-demand file search utility which a very intuitive GUI window to provide your optional search criteria either for file name/date/size etc., or for actual file content.

Naturally, since Search My Files isn't based on an index it does take longer to run than Everything even if all you're doing is a file name search. But it's a nice secondary alternative search mechanism for when you need to do those every-so-often special searches. Again, its GUI is just very straightforward and understandable, not to mention it can include network locations for the search... it isn't limited to just local drives.

Just note that Everything makes use of the standard Windows Explorer right-click popup menu when you select items in its hit-list. Search My Files does not.
