    Generic Icons on pictures

When I open a folder with pictures in it (set to view as large icons) all I get is generic icons for each picture. Used to be able to see the actual pix on each one. How do I get back the picture instead of a generic?
    Thanks for any help.

Went thru the recommended site to do the regedit. Followed the instructions down to the "shell icons". My computer does NOT show "shell icons" in either the 32 or 64 bit side. My HP Pavilion is 64 bit.
I also cleared and reset the thumbnail cache.
    Any other suggestions?
