Configuring Updates Fails My sons laptop is currently stuck at the screen "Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer."
It has been like this over that last several hours or so. It keeps rebooting to the same screen like its in a loop.
I have turned it off and tried safe mode but it goes back to the same screen. Ran the diagnostics that came with the laptop and everything passed, no problems noted.
I have the reinstallation dvd for this laptop.
What do I need to do to attempt recovery of the OS and will any data he has be kept or will it be lost?
His computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525, 3 GB RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium, SP1 (maybe SP2), 32 bit.

Try it a few more times. Only, once it gets stuck, just reboot it. Wait just a little bit when it does that...like maybe 3-5 minutes. Eventually it will stop trying and load to original without the update. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS 7600.20510 x86 CPU P4 550 3.4 GHz HT running at 3.5 GHz Motherboard MSI PM8M3-V (MS-7211 v1.x) Micro-ATX mainboard Memory OCZ 2 GB(2x1GB) DDR400mHz running @ 414 mHz Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 3850 IceQ 3 Turbo HDMI Dual DL-DVI AGP Sound Card MOTU Traveler firewire studio interface 192 kHz 24 bit Monitor(s) Displays 22" widescreen Acer X223W LCD, 17" Compaq P75 CRT Screen Resolution 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitch Classical Keyboard 200 Mouse Logitech Mediaplay cordless PSU 350W generic Case Cybertronpc, it glows blue Cooling stock cpu fan, Ice-Q 3 gpu and system, many case fans Hard Drives SATA I x2 WD, 400 GB and 120 GB, SATA 2 WD Caviar Black 1 TB Internet Speed 1792/448 kbits/sec Other Info SATA II PCI fake RAID adapter, 1 GB Readyboost, original ATI Remote Wonder (even works with WMC perfectly), Logitech Rumblepad 2 game controller x2 |

Just booted it up again, same screen. I'll let it reboot several more times and see if anything happens. Will let you know. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Touchsmart 520Z All-In-One OS Windows 7 64 bit CPU AMD A6-3600 quad-core (2.1GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, DDR#-1600 Memory 6GB Graphics Card 2GB NVidia GEForce GT540M Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays 23 inch display Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard HP Wireless Mouse HP Wireless Hard Drives 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s |

In the last 15 minutes, the laptop has rebooted 4 times and has not gone beyond the "configuring updates" screen. The light for the HD is blinking indicating HD activity. Thats it so far. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Touchsmart 520Z All-In-One OS Windows 7 64 bit CPU AMD A6-3600 quad-core (2.1GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, DDR#-1600 Memory 6GB Graphics Card 2GB NVidia GEForce GT540M Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays 23 inch display Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard HP Wireless Mouse HP Wireless Hard Drives 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s |

Whats my next option? I would like to be able to get his system restored to before the updates. However, since I cannot get past the configure updates screen, this might not happen. Not sure if using the Dell reinstallation disk will do a complete install (deleting all files on the HD) or if it can reinstall just the OS and leave everything else. Haven't actually put the disk in the drive yet, don't want to lose everything yet. Have to find out first what my son has on it besides a lot of music. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Touchsmart 520Z All-In-One OS Windows 7 64 bit CPU AMD A6-3600 quad-core (2.1GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, DDR#-1600 Memory 6GB Graphics Card 2GB NVidia GEForce GT540M Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays 23 inch display Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard HP Wireless Mouse HP Wireless Hard Drives 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s |

It won't delete anything. It will make a folder called Windows.old and place everything in there.
Just don't do any formatting and you'll be cool. Install Windows to where it is now. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS 7600.20510 x86 CPU P4 550 3.4 GHz HT running at 3.5 GHz Motherboard MSI PM8M3-V (MS-7211 v1.x) Micro-ATX mainboard Memory OCZ 2 GB(2x1GB) DDR400mHz running @ 414 mHz Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 3850 IceQ 3 Turbo HDMI Dual DL-DVI AGP Sound Card MOTU Traveler firewire studio interface 192 kHz 24 bit Monitor(s) Displays 22" widescreen Acer X223W LCD, 17" Compaq P75 CRT Screen Resolution 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitch Classical Keyboard 200 Mouse Logitech Mediaplay cordless PSU 350W generic Case Cybertronpc, it glows blue Cooling stock cpu fan, Ice-Q 3 gpu and system, many case fans Hard Drives SATA I x2 WD, 400 GB and 120 GB, SATA 2 WD Caviar Black 1 TB Internet Speed 1792/448 kbits/sec Other Info SATA II PCI fake RAID adapter, 1 GB Readyboost, original ATI Remote Wonder (even works with WMC perfectly), Logitech Rumblepad 2 game controller x2 |

I've seen this folder with Windows 7, didn't know that Vista did it also.
I will go ahead and give it a shot as soon as my son gets home from work shortly.

Got it working. The reinstall disk had a restore option and I was able to restore his computer to an earlier date. Now I just need to get him to clean up some of the crap he has on his computer (has 33GB free out of 136GB).
Thanks again for your time and input. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Touchsmart 520Z All-In-One OS Windows 7 64 bit CPU AMD A6-3600 quad-core (2.1GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, DDR#-1600 Memory 6GB Graphics Card 2GB NVidia GEForce GT540M Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays 23 inch display Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard HP Wireless Mouse HP Wireless Hard Drives 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s |

You're welcome. You can install the failed update manually according to Microsoft and you will not run into the issue again, if attempted this way. See the link I posted.
Enjoy.
Near bottom:
"How to avoid this problem
To avoid this problem, obtain and install update 937287 from the Microsoft Download Center separately from all other updates on the Windows Update site. Install the update that applies to your version of Windows Vista so that you can successfully install future updates."
Just substitute KB version with the one that was causing problems on 7. You can find out by looking at Windows Update history. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS 7600.20510 x86 CPU P4 550 3.4 GHz HT running at 3.5 GHz Motherboard MSI PM8M3-V (MS-7211 v1.x) Micro-ATX mainboard Memory OCZ 2 GB(2x1GB) DDR400mHz running @ 414 mHz Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 3850 IceQ 3 Turbo HDMI Dual DL-DVI AGP Sound Card MOTU Traveler firewire studio interface 192 kHz 24 bit Monitor(s) Displays 22" widescreen Acer X223W LCD, 17" Compaq P75 CRT Screen Resolution 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitch Classical Keyboard 200 Mouse Logitech Mediaplay cordless PSU 350W generic Case Cybertronpc, it glows blue Cooling stock cpu fan, Ice-Q 3 gpu and system, many case fans Hard Drives SATA I x2 WD, 400 GB and 120 GB, SATA 2 WD Caviar Black 1 TB Internet Speed 1792/448 kbits/sec Other Info SATA II PCI fake RAID adapter, 1 GB Readyboost, original ATI Remote Wonder (even works with WMC perfectly), Logitech Rumblepad 2 game controller x2 Configuring Updates Fails problems?
