My computer freezes just after the windows desktop starts

Hi,

My computer goes through the boot process, I put in the password, and just after I see the desktop, it freezes. Most of the desktop icons remain white. The hard drive is sounding like it's still active and the HD light continues to flash. It will start in safe mode, though.

I've tried to restore it And ran a virus scan. I've tried re-seating the memory and video card. I don't have any "spare parts" to try and swap out nor do I have the budget (6 kids) to just buy other parts to "hopefully" fix it, and like all of you, I really need this running asap.

Any help or suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome ashaw mate run these in safe mode first up

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

If you can get Speccy to run say from a stick made on another machine then let us know what the temps are.
https://www.piriform.com/speccy
I would also like to see what the PSU is putting out too but if the machine is not running past that Window then can you measure the volts on the 24 pin with a digital multimeter - they are not expensive and let us know what the different coloured cables produce.
You just need to put the black lead into any black cabled pin on that socket and then just test the rest ie red , yellow and orange to find the volts. There is one cable that is grey (pin 8) I am interested in what that reads.
See this ATX 24 pin power supply connector pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru just make sure you ground any static electricity from yourself before you touch anything inside the case ie touch a water tap or suchlike.

OK, thank you for your suggestions. I ran the above tests and it didn't fix anything. It is still not working. It runs in safe mode no problem, but when I run it in normal mode, the monitor is now blank. I can see it on my network and the HD light flashes.

Could it be the video card? Or the power supply? The power supply is only a 350 watt. I don't have either to swap out to try. And I don't want to waste the money if it's not these.

I also did a Malwarebytes scan and nothing came up there.

Next run SuperAntiSpyware and then SFC /SCANNOW Command.

Try updating or reinstalling the Display driver in Device Manager.

Enable hardware auto-updating via Windows Update (Steps 3 and 6) then Check for Updates, install all rounds of Important and Optional Updates.

Continue with the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7. What are the temp readings? Repeat errors? Problem solutions?

Thank you for your continued support!

I've checked all the updates and system restore and recover options.

I've done the SFC /scannow three times.

Safe mode has been running securely now for a few hours as I am backing up my data.

I'm at the point where I am just going to do a fresh install of windows. I don't know what else to do???

Well that's always a good thing if its done correctly. Stick with the tools and methods in the tutorial below and you'll get and keep a perfect install.

It does sound like you could have a display driver problem. What is the display adapter and installed driver version?. You should already know this if you've done all the steps.
