7 professional with no sleep?

i inherited a laptop from my wife, which in itself is great. its an older HP compaq, which someone (she bought it used) has installed Windows 7 professional on. anyway, she basicly used it for e-mail and face book. and not much else. i use it for a lot more things, and i am on and off it all day. the problem is there is no way to put this machine to sleep. i have to shut it down after every use, or leave it run all day long. neither of which i am a fan of. i have done all the normal things, tried to set up sleep in the power settings, i even changed the power plan, and i have gone into the advance settings in the power plan. there is no place where i can turn on sleep in the advanced settings. only two check boxes that will enable the computer to be woken up on timers. which in itself seems very odd. i did check the boxes in hopes that mayb it would open a spot where i could enable sleep. but it did not. i also let the computer run all day to see if it ever went to sleep by itself, which i did not. i am lost. can anyone help me figure out what is going on?

No option to close the lid and have it go to sleep ?

It should be in there somewhere.

Lets see what Sleep modes are supported in BIOS.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt and create an Energy Report with this command:
powercfg -energy

Here is what you need to look at in your energy report.

Let us know what is supported, and you can add a screen print with these instructions:

ok, i am not very computer literate like most of you guys are. i do not know what an elevated command prompt is, or how to do one.

Instructions are in the Blue Link in post #3

Or, do this:
Type cmd in the Start orb Search field
Right click on cmd.exe and click Run as administrator

oh boy, i think i am opening a GIANT can of worms here. it did not show anything you had listed above. instead, it shows energy efficiency problems were found
10 errors
7 warnings
15 informational

see C:\Windows\system32\energy*report.html

i right clicked on that, went down to find, typed it in, but nothing happened when i clicked find now, except a short little beep.

i am really not sure how to get it. the " C:\Windows\system32\energy*report.html " goes nowhere that i can find. i tried typing it into the search box at the start up menu. though the html on the end seems like it should be an online address, (which i did try also). i appreciate the help. this is so far over my head its leaving a con trail.

The report is energy-report.html i.e. with a dash not with an asterisk as you've typed and it is found within C:\windows\system32. Go there and drag the file onto your desktop then double-click it. Your browser will open and the Sleep State info is about half-way down the report.

If S3 and S4 are false then you likely need to reboot to the laptop's BIOS and look for an enabler in there.
