Another way to open ISO files

If you occasionally have to open ISO files, but don't want to download a third party problem (certainly not one called demon or devil or whatever), here's one way to do it: in XP Mode, one of the options is to mount an ISO image rather than the CD-ROM drive at startup.

Daemon Tools Lite is a truly GREAT free app and the recently released latest version is fully W7 compatible. Also Virtual Clone Drive (another free one) works very well, indeed. Either of these are much easier and simpler than using XP mode, imo.

It's just too bad that Windows inherently cannot mount an ISO file like Linux.

    mount -o loop -t iso9660 file.iso /mountpoint

One time I downloaded a version of Daemon that was flagged as containing spyware + was difficult to delete. I've been wary of it since, although perhaps unfairly so.

The other issue that I have had with deamon tools is that some games refuse to play properly and such when tools like daemon tools is present as it assumes that you are trying to bypass the cd protection schemes and such.

Linux appears to have a lot of nifty commands. One day I may have to try it, but I am afraid I would get addicted.

I'm speculating there must be a command built in somewhere in the Windows 7 OS.

Btw, I tried the XP program that Windows produces (winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21) and it did not work in XP Mode.

By default, no there is not.

My favourite is UltraISO, the latest builds work beautifully in W7 too :)

It depends on *where* you download Daemon Tools ...

That article is how I found out a couple of years ago about the Windows tool that lets you mount ISO files in Windows (and which does not appear to work in XP Mode, alas). I probably found the article after receiving the Daemon spyware. That experience really made me very hesitant to install any third party freeware unless I read multiple reviews about from trusted sources. Whether or not that particular spyware was harmful isn't so much the point, just the thought that somone would/could do that in a widely distributed program is very troubling.
