Yeah, as expected. And resize your shadowstorage. Use this command:

    vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=20GB

You can also go with 10GB or with 3% or anything. Figure each restore point takes 500MB to 1GB of space. So 10GB would give room for appr. 12 to 15 restore points.

Btw - the resize command will automatically delete the surplus.

Deleting the system restores resolved the space issue. For some reason it kept wanting to apply this to an empty folder in my C:/ drive which must be why it never worked before. Thank you for all the help everyone!

But make sure you resize your shadowstorage. Else you will have the same problem in no time.

yup, I did set it down to 20 gb. Any idea why the system restore would eat up so much space so quickly though?

I've never had any problem with it personally.

I think by default Windows will make one a week?

When was the last time, if ever, that you know your allocated size was set to some sane number, like 5, 10, or 20?

Did all of this sudden growth and space loss occur in a short time?

Windows updates often force a new restore point.

Since I haven't had issues with it, I haven't really examined what can go wrong. It's still a worthwhile feature that works over 95% of the time for me.

Maybe you can run something down in Event Viewer if concerned.

Well shortly after loading this OS onto my laptop I noticed there was some missing space (maybe ~30GB) but since I had so much space I never really cared. That was probably a year and a half ago. Then maybe 6 months ago it was ~70 GB but I still didn't really pay any attention other than a virus scan. It was only yesterday that I realized how much was actually missing and after seeing that I lost 5 GB overnight I got really concerned.

I've honestly never set an allocated size so it must have been running rampant since I loaded windows.

Not really a concern more of a curiosity. I should have been more proactive in trying to figure it out but it was always just a background item until now.

    Possible Avast Issue

Avast can cause System Restore to allocate itself 50% of your HDD/SSD space.
